Snow! In Cornwall?!?!

Hello and welcome to this weeks blog post.

What a week in Cornwall! We have endured temperatures of -7, had snow, winds gusting over the dunes and fantastic opportunities to get out with the camera and shoot some amazing things.

This week I spent a lot of time with the Phantom in the air with some pretty extravagant sunsets and rises, watching them live on the HD screen is not only a privilege but an honour. "Droning around" first cut has just been published on the website, I hope you find it as entertaining as I did filming it. "Droning around" started out life as just an idea that was inspired by a YouTube video on the importance of 'B roll'. I loved the way they captured the most magical scenes and how they were able to stich them together to create this sublime sequence. They really captured the emotion of weather, the woods, the atmosphere, the way the drone footage made you feel small, emotional and free to the footage of them filming making you feel inclusive in the making of the film.

So I decided that I was going to try and use the same idea from that film and implement it in my own. "Droning around" is far from complete and the upload on the website is just a teaser, I truly hope that it captures your imagination as to what the full film will look like.

Another incredible thing that has happened this week! Mia, who is a Husky cross Malamute, has taken her first steps in the snow! Aside from her absolutely loving her time in the vast expanse of white, I managed to snap this photo of her. I love how the snow has just perfectly landed on her face and how the white of her coat seamlessly merges with the snow. Fascinatingly Mia has two coats, a coarser outer coat that is water proof and a softer inner coat that will keep her warm down to artic conditions. I always wondered how these types of dog keep cool in warmer climates, it turns out they use their paws to regulate their internal temperate, blood vessels that come close the pads on the paws cool the blood so when its circulated back though the body it cools the rest of the dog. I know that's not remotely photography related but I find that just incredible.

Cornwall today could have been easily mistaken for the Scottish highlands or something out of Lord Of The Rings.

Although rare, snow in Cornwall is simply stunning and produces some phenomenal photographic opportunities. With the met office predicting we have a few more days of snow ahead of us, I hope you also have fun with your camera, remember that the snow will act as a reflector and will fool your light meter into thinking that its brighter than it really is, so step the exposure down a stop, that way you may have better results. Above all else, stay safe!

Until next week.
